Brief History of Creative Needlework Guild

Creative Needlework Guild was accepted into the Embroiderers’ Guild of America on November 19, 1975, with an ambitious list of 15 positions on its Board of Directors. The group of members was largely formed of teachers, who could not attend the daytime meetings of any local groups. Therefore, meetings were held in the evening.

For more than 40 years, the Chapter has enjoyed a diverse membership, consisting of women from New Jersey, as well as two neighboring states. At the present time, there are three generations from one family, who are active participants. Many members are very creative and range in accomplishments from designing their own pieces down to novices wanting to learn needle and thread work. Many of the programs and projects are taught by its own Chapter members.

Some of the meetings are devoted to Outreach Projects, such as creating post-surgical pillows for breast cancer patients, donations to the Ronald McDonald House, and baby blankets for low-income mothers. There have been road trips to the Woodlawn Plantation Needlework Exhibit, Lancaster Quilting exhibits, and special needlework and tapestry exhibits at Winterthur.

Creative Needlework Guild is looking forward to celebrating its 45th year in November of 2020.
